The spat between the US and China over contaminated food exports highlights a rapidly spreading battle line in the world economy: the use of product standards to regulate, and some would say stifle, international trade.
Such “non-tariff barriers”, particularly food standards, are frequently both more important and harder to eliminate than simple tariffs. Arguments frequently descend into a mire of competing scientific claims about safety and risk in which trade negotiators – let alone ministers and the general public – risk drowning in complexity. And while polo shirt consumers' patriotic desire to protect domestic farmers or manufacturers requires some degree of altruism, given the higher prices this entails, fears of being poisoned by foreign food appeal directly to their self-interest.

It’s 10 p.m. You may not know where your child is, but the chip does.
The chip will also know if your child has fallen and needs immediate help. Once paramedics arrive, the chip will also be able to tell the rescue workers which drugs little Johnny or Janie is allergic to. At the hospital, the chip will tell doctors his or her complete medical history.
And of course, when you arrive to pick up your child, settling the hospital bill with your health insurance policy will be a simple matter of waving your own chip - the one embedded in your hand.
To some, this may sound far-fetched. But the technology for such chips is no longer the stuff of science fiction. And it may soon offer many other benefits besides locating lost children or elderly Alzheimer patients.
"Down the line, it could be usedas] credit cards and such," says Chris Hables Gray, a professor of cultural studies of science and technology at the Unive

Scientists monitoring earth movements in Antarctica believe they have found a singing iceberg.

Sound waves from the iceberg had a frequency of around 0.5 hertz, too low to be heard by humans, but by playing them at higher speed the iceberg sounded like a swarm of bees or an orchestra warming up, the scientists said.

The German Alfred Wegener institute for polar and marine research publish the results of its study, done in 2002, in Science magazine on Friday.

Between July and November mini saws mini speaker 2002 researchers picked up acoustic signals of unprecedented clarity when recording seismic signals to measure earthquakes and tectonic movements on the Ekstroem ice shelf on Antarctica's South Atlantic coast.

Tracking the signal, the scientists mini bike found a 50 by 20 kilometer iceberg that mini bikes had collided with an underwater peninsula and was slowly scraping around it.

A University of Toronto study indicates an inflamed injury may increase levels of a protein responsible for persistent pain. And the enhanced levels of that protein can cause one's brain to mimic pain long after the original pain source has disappeared. The Canadian researchers said their study might have serious implications for the millions of people suffering from chronic pain. The study demonstrates how inflammation in mice increases NR2B proteins -- proteins that facilitate nerve cell communication -- that imprint a painful response in the brain even after the stimulus is removed. "What we’re interested in uncovering are the molecular mechanisms that can turn early pain into persistent pain," said Physiology Professor Min Zhuo, the lead author of the study. "We believe that the body’s inflammatory response helps to etch the initial pain into our memory." The research is detailed in the current issue of the Journal of Neuroscience.
